You Are Not Broken – Your Body is Wise: A Blog About Somatic Therapy

In the current state of the world, and this country, it feels so important to have pathways to navigate feelings of helplessness. The desire to enact real change in the moment can become overwhelming when the environment we are living in does not seem to want to act on our needs. Tonglen is a Buddhist practice that I have found supports my system when helplessness takes over.

You Are Not Broken – Your Body is Wise: A Blog About Somatic Therapy

If you’re a trauma survivor, you’ve probably noticed that healing isn’t just about talking. Trauma can live in the body, presenting in several forms like chronic tension, restlessness, numbness, or a sense of being “stuck.”

Even when your mind understands what happened, your body may be confused and strained, and possibly still hold onto the pain.

Somatic therapy offers a powerful, body-centered approach to healing trauma – one that gently supports you in feeling safe, grounded, and whole again. It helps connect the body-mind-soul, healing all parts of your being.

So, what is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is a form of therapy that helps you reconnect with mind-body-soul and safely release stored trauma. The word somatic means “relating to the body,” and this approach recognizes that trauma isn’t just psychological — it’s also physical.

When we experience trauma, the body often goes into survival mode: fight, flight, freeze, or collapse. If the trauma is deeply stored and these responses are not addressed, they can stick like glue to the nervous system. Somatic therapy helps complete these unfinished responses, so your body-mind-soul can begin to heal.

Why Trauma Survivors Benefit from Somatic Therapy

Talk therapy can be powerful — but for many survivors, it doesn’t always reach the deep, embodied layers of trauma that may linger following talk therapy. You might:

  • Feel anxious, on edge, or hypervigilant
  • Struggle with chronic tension or fatigue
  • Feel disconnected from your body or emotions
  • Avoid certain sensations, places, or memories

Somatic therapy supports healing without requiring you to relive or retell your trauma. It works with your body’s natural capacity to regulate and restore itself — at a pace that feels safe.

What to Expect in a Session

Every somatic therapist has their own style, but sessions may include:

  • Mindful awareness of bodily sensations
  • Gentle movement, posture work, or breath exercises
  • Yoga, Trauma informed Yoga, Restorative Yoga
  • Tools for calming your nervous system
  • Tracking how emotions show up in your body
  • Creating a sense of safety and internal trust

You remain in control of your process. The focus is not on forcing anything to happen, but on noticing and being mindful of what your body is already communicating and offering it support.

You Are Not Broken — Your Body Is Wise

Trauma can leave us feeling fragmented or disconnected. Somatic therapy offers a path toward wholeness by honoring the body’s role in healing.

You don’t need to fight your body – you can learn to listen to it. And through that connection, healing becomes possible.
